What was I thinking to want to keep honeybees?  Being a hobby woodworker most  my life. In 2005 I was asked by my son-in-law to build him some bee hives out of cypress wood.   Building the hives in my woodworking shop went well.  So well that I built some extras for myself.   I asked my son-in-law where I could get some bees.  He took care of that by splitting off three colonies from his in the Spring of 2006.  That was a learning year for me and a tough year on my son-in-law with all the questions and phone calls.  Every visit from him was a trip to the bee yard to correct the problems I had created.  I made it through that year with enough honey for the bees winter stores.

In 2007, I added a few more colonies and that year I had my first honey harvest.  After I bottled that first jar of honey I was hooked.  I sold a little and gave away most of that first years harvest.  Each year I have been adding more and more colonies.  So now in 2015, I am up to around 60 colonies.  I retired from state government in early 2012 and have more time to devote to the bees and manufacturing of equipment.

Oh, by the way it helps when you have a son-in-law (Dr. Jamie Ellis) and a daughter (Dr. Amanda Ellis) with Ph.D.’s in entomology.  They have been my go to resource for answers.

If you need a hobby, you should think about getting some honey bees.  They are one of  God’s greatest creations.

Along with my helper (wife) we are checking on the progress of the bees.
